In a separate interview with Yahoo, Johansson stated that she and the screenwriters felt compelled to create parallels between the Marvel character’s story and those of women who have been subjected to mistreatment by powerful men

“We had to say something about this tremendous movement of women supporting other women, and coming out on the other side of these shared trauma experiences by truly coming up and supporting one another,” she added. “When we first started talking really about what this could be about, it was right around the time of the #MeToo movement, and we felt like we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to draw a parallel between the two.”
